No social media in Iowa? That’s what our newfound friends and rivals – MediaTwoPointOh in North Carolina – say in one of their latest blog postings:
“They’re in Iowa … There’s no social media in Iowa yet – is there?”
and …
“Seriously people – they’re in Iowa. Everyone in New York knows you need to be in New York to be a “real” agency. And we’re closer to New York than Iowa!”
Here is our video response to the false accusations about Iowa’s social media game – which you can also watch on YouTube
If you don’t know the back-story, the AdMavericks blog was selected by advertising consultant Michael Gass’ Fuel Lines website to be included in a blog-of-the-month vote among 45 different ad agencies across the U.S. Using some social media savvy, we were able to jump out to a quick lead in the voting. Obviously, this caught the attention of some of our competitors, specifically those at Media Two, who decided it was time try to shoot down the high-flyin’ AdMavericks.
Me, Goose and the rest of the squad are used to the heat of battle. But when our whole state is being dissed? Well, now you’re entering the “Danger Zone“.
Fellow Iowans … this isn’t just personal anymore … this is about our whole state. Let’s let our friends in Carolina know that Iowa isn’t just another fly-over state … it’s the center of the social media universe! A vote for AdMavericks isn’t just a vote for our blog anymore … it’s a vote for the whole social media lovin’ state of Iowa!
Media Two Point Oh? How about Media Two Point Oh No? Congrats to our new friends in Carolina … In defense of the great state of Iowa, we’ve lost that lovin’ feelin for Media Two and we affectionately name you our worst of the week!

P.S. This is just the tip of the iceberg for social media in Iowa. Sorry we couldn’t mention more people, attention spans being what they are.

Nice work group – I enjoyed it – and of course, posted an update to our blog reflecting it at http://www.mediatwopointoh.com/warning-unprofessionalism-in-social-media/.
In all seriousness, in my younger years I made a weekend trip to Des Moines with a buddy of mine and some roller blades and a backpack. We met some of the nicest people, and had one of the best weekends ever! If you’re ever in the Raleigh area, or we hook up at some of the trade shows, we’ll share stories.
Thanks for the entertainment this week! I enjoyed it. ~Michael

Thanks, Michael, we’ll gladly welcome you back and give you an alternative route to get here other than I-80! : )

What I’m dieing to know is if Guitars & Cadillac’s is still open! If it is – that’s where I want to meet up! That and if the state trooper who gave us a lift back from Saylorville Lake and hooked us up with food, drinks and lodging is still there! (see – I told you I had some good stories to share other than Youtube cornfield videos
)

Guitars and Cadillacs is no longer open, but there’s a place called Miss Kitty’s that serves up club music and country. Line dancing lessons and great drink prices too. http://misskittysusa.com/index.html
But if you have not been to Iowa (especially the Des Moines area in the past five years, you would not even recognize the place. It’s awesome. We’d love to have you come up and visit.

Classic post, Josh!
And, Michael, I’m sure if you came back to Des Moines, the social media strong would make you feel right at home (State Troopers or not).
Thanks to both of you for keeping this conversation “social.” It shows that the true spirit of social media is “Strength in numbers.” Whether we’re in Iowa or North Carolina (where I have relatives by-the-way), the sole purpose is to keep our communities growing and learning.
Thanks so much, Josh, for including me in the Central Iowa social media featurette, too. I’m honored!
Keep Cooking (great conversation)
